Martha L. Reed

Pendleton - Martha L. Kelly Reed, 89, of Pendleton, passed away February 8, 2008 at Rawlins House in Pendleton after an extended illness. Martha was born September 29, 1918 in Anderson to Fred G. and Pearl G. Shoultz Kelly. After graduating from Anderson High School in 1936, she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University 1945. She was one of the first two people to earn a Master of Arts Degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy from Ball State University in 1948. She taught in Anderson Public Schools from 1945 to 1947, and was instrumental in establishing the Program of Speech and Hearing in the school system in 1947. She served as the head of Anderson Public Schools' Program of Speech and Hearing Therapy Department until 1959. Martha married Oliver Eugene Reed on February 25, 1959, and moved to Muncie were she was employed by Muncie Community Schools as a speech, Language and Hearing Clinician from 1959 until her retirement in 1979. She attended and taught Sunday School at East Lynn Christian Church in Anderson, Normal City United Methodist Church in Muncie, and First United Methodist Church in Pendleton. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States as well as abroad. She also enjoyed drawing and photography, and visiting with her family. She was a life member of the National Education Assocation and the Indiana Speech and Hearing Association, a member of the local, state, and national Retired Teachers Association, and a member of the Beta Mu chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She is survived by her brother Fred G. Kelly Jr., of Punta Gorda, Fla, her brother and sister-in-law Marivin E. and Jill Kelly of North Port, Fla., and her sister-in-law Shirley Kelly of Pendleton. Also surviving are nieces and nephews Debbie Tony Sisson of Anderson, Alan Mary Kelly of Brownsburg, Tom Leslie Kelly of Texas, Patrick Kelly of Louisiana, Nanette Dewayne Orr of Pendleton, Michael Linda Kelly of Pendleton, Cheryl Brad Williamson of Muncie, Garry Shannon Kelly of Pendleton, and Jerry Christi of Pendleton. Also Surviving are great-nieces and great-nephews Brian Samantha Sisson, Angela Alex Wendricks, Shawna Aranda, Ryan Elliott, Marissa Andy Skaggs, Amanda Kelly, Sasha Kelly, Tracy Kelly, Jennie Kelly, Brock Williamson, Chase Williamson, Jerin Kelly, Scott Kelly, Paige Williamson, Justis Kelly and Chris Kelly. Additional survivors include great-great niece and great-great nephews Anna, Avery, and Callaway, as well as several cousins. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Fred G. Kelly and Pearl G. Kelly, husband Oliver Eugene Reed in 1981, and brothers Dale G. Kelly in 2003 and Lloyd G. Kelly in 2005. Services will be Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 11:30 AM, at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, South Chapel, Anderson, Indiana, with Rev. Steve W. Austin, Sr. officiating. The family would like to thank the staff of Rawlins House for their care of Martha. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Muncie, Indiana.
